The root chakra is sometimes referred to as the Muladhara chakra — the first chakra is located at the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first three vertebrae. It conveys the deepest connections with your physical body, your environment and the Earth.
The root chakra governs the lower body, including the bladder, kidneys, lower spine and back. It is the centre which governs confidence and survival instincts, like “fight or flight.” The root chakra comprises of whatever grounds you in your life. This includes your basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and safety, as well as your more emotional needs such as letting go of fear. When these needs are met, you feel grounded and safe, and you tend to worry less on an everyday basis.
Red is the widely accepted chakra color associated with the root chakra. Some energy healers say, the root chakra may also be associated with the colors brown, black, and gray.
If your root chakra is out of balance, or blocked, you may feel one or several of the following:
- Feelings of insecurity, issue of basic needs not being met
- Sexual dysfunction
- Eating disorders
- Not feeling connected to anyone
- Decisions, outlook based in fear mentality
- Feelings of unworthiness, not deserving of love
An over active root chakra may produce the following systems –
- Greediness and controlling others
- Belligerent to those who challenge your authority may be a problem.
- Very rigid boundaries making it very difficult for you to accept change.
- Very materialistic or impulsive and think that your value or self-worth exists in having such things
- Over-active sex drive
What can you do to balance and support your root chakra?
Eat foods to support your root chakra:
Root vegetables: carrots, potatoes, parsnips, ginger, beets, radishes, beets, onions, garlic, etc.
Protein-rich foods: eggs, meats, beans, tofu, soy products, peanut butter, nuts.
Spices: horseradish, hot paprika, chives, cayenne, pepper
Red Coloured Foods: red apples, strawberries, red cabbage.
Actions to take –
Walk barefoot in the grass or sand often. Mother nature and her energy, has magical healing benefits.
Stomp your feet in the earth.
Hug a tree.
Take a shower mindfully. Water is cleansing and grounded. Embrace and honour the beauty, magnificence and power of your body. Bathe yourself in to a grounded and mindful meditation.
Dance, do yoga, keep your body active to inspire more life force energy to circulate throughout your body.
Meditate envisioning yourself cocooned in red energy, healing and balancing your root. Envision your energy coming out of the bottoms of your feet, like roots of a tree, grounding you down to Mother Earth.
Use stones that are in the root chakra frequency to assist with balancing – some choices are red jasper, bloodstone, red carnelian, and garnet. Other options are smokey quartz, hematite or rhodochrosite.
The root vibrates in harmony to “C” Note. Additionally chanting “LAM” will have a positive effect on this chakra. Vibrational Note C, Frequency: 256 Hz is good. Try meditating with singing bowls or music made including these frequencies and notes. Listen to the elemental root chakra sounds of thunder, native music and drumming.
